James Thompson, M.D. is a Board-certified emergency medicine specialist caring for patients in the Providence urgent care centers in Torrance and San Pedro. He worked in the hospital emergency room setting in Colorado for 35 years before moving to California in 2011 to be closer to his family. His background as an emergency room physician has led him to embrace his new career as an urgent care provider.

“Although the medical problems seen in EDs and urgent care centers are similar in many ways, the opportunity to spend quality time with patients discussing their medical concerns and answering their questions has been a welcome change to the endlessly frantic pace of emergency medicine,” says Dr. Thompson. He takes pride in delivering truly personalized, empathetic care to each and every patient he sees.

Dr. Thompson received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He completed his internship in emergency medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. Why did he choose to go into medicine? “To make the world a healthier place, one patient at a time,” he responds. “My philosophy is to first, do no harm, and then give honest, informed, and science-driven care!”

In his off hours, Dr. Thompson likes to work in his yard and play with his grandson.
