Brenda Shen, M.D. is Board-certified in Family Medicine. If you ask her about her medical philosophy, she will tell you, “My philosophy is to provide whole-person care, which is why I chose to specialize in family medicine. Whole-person care entails treating the mind, body, and spirit altogether. That’s why I love Providence. Treating the whole person – body, mind and spirit is part of their mantra.” Her patients say she is kind, thoughtful, a great listener, and communicates well with them. They also say she is very knowledgeable and professional. This is probably why her patients are constantly giving her such stellar reviews.
Born in Hong Kong, Dr. Shen is fluent in English and Cantonese. She moved to the United States when she was seven and considers Los Angeles her home but loves to travel and has lived for months at a time during her medical school years in other parts of the United States, including Florida, New York, and Northern California. Dr. Shen says, “My passion for medicine stems from my core drive to help those in need.”
Dr. Shen studied at UCLA in Glendale, California for her undergraduate degree in Microbiology and Genetics and studied at St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies, and earned her medical degree. She completed her internship and residency at the Glendale Adventist Medical Center in Glendale.
Dr. Shen has been involved in research and writing many articles, just one of them being her important case report, Spontaneous Esophageal Rupture, a Chronic case of Boerhaave Syndrome, which was published in BMC Gastroenterology.
Additionally, she has enjoyed being a part of the UCLA Alumni Mentor Program and continues to enjoy providing instruction to her nurse practitioners.
In her spare time, Dr. Shen loves recreational reading, trying out new restaurants, cooking, exercising outdoors, doing arts and crafts, playing piano, spending time with family, friends, and her dog. “I would like to travel to as many countries and cities as possible in this lifetime. We have traveled to many beautiful places, but there are still so many more on our list.”
