Cervical Cancer: What Every Woman Should Know

In the United States, the American Cancer Society estimates that over 14,000 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer each year, and about 4,000 will die from this preventable disease. Over 90% of cases are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), and the diseae disproportionately affects underserved populations. Early cervical cancer often has no noticeable symptoms, which is why regular screening is important. In most cases cervical cancer can be prevented through early detection and treatment of abnormal cell changes. These changes are typically detected through a Pap test, which checks for abnormal or precancerous changes in the cells on the cervix.

Who Is Most at Risk?

Women who have been infected with HPV, especially those who have not received the HPV vaccine, are at greatest risk. Other risk factors include having multiple sexual partners, early onset of sexual activity, a weakened immune system, and smoking. Those with limited access to health care may also be more vulnerable because they are less likely to undergo regular screenings and early detection.

What Are the Symptoms?

When symptoms do occur, women may notice abnormal vaginal bleeding (such as bleeding after intercourse, between periods, or after menopause), unusual vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, or pain during intercourse. If you experience any of these warning signs, it is important to see your health care provider promptly.

What can you do to safeguard your health?

  • Get regular Pap tests and HPV screenings as recommended by your health care provider.
  • Discuss HPV vaccination with your doctor.
  • Be aware of the warning signs of cervical cancer.

Remember: early detection is the best medicine.
