Sports Physicals: A Simple Step Toward a Safer Season
Before the first whistle blows, a sports physical can give athletes extra assurance that they are healthy and fit enough to engage in their favorite sport. Physicals help spot health concerns, review past injuries, and make sure the body is ready for the season ahead. For adult consumers, this matters whether you are signing up for a weekend soccer league, training for a charity run, or helping a teen athlete get ready for school sports.
“A sports physical is like a safety check before a road trip,” says Dr. Neel Raval. “Most people feel fine, but the exam can help us find small issues before they become big problems.” During the visit, a provider may check blood pressure, heart and lung health, flexibility, strength, and joint movement. They may also ask about medicines, allergies, concussions, asthma, chest pain, dizziness, and family health history.
These questions are important because some conditions only show up during exercise. A person may feel well at rest but notice symptoms when running, lifting, or playing hard. Dr. Raval puts it simply: “The goal is not to keep people off the field. The goal is to help them play with more confidence and less risk.”
A sports physical is also a great time to talk about injury prevention. That may include warming up, stretching, wearing the right shoes or gear, drinking enough water, building strength slowly, and taking rest days. If an athlete had a past ankle sprain, knee injury, or shoulder problem, the provider can suggest ways to lower the chance of getting hurt again.
Timing matters, too. Try to schedule the exam several weeks before the season starts. This leaves time for follow-up visits, tests, or therapy if needed. Waiting until the last minute can create stress and may delay participation.
“Think of this visit as a partnership,” says Dr. Raval. “When athletes, families, coaches, and health care providers work together, everyone has a better chance at a strong, safe season.” A short appointment today can help support better performance, smarter choices, and fewer surprises tomorrow.
