Back-to-School Health Checklist for Parents

National Immunization Awareness Month

Back-to-school season can feel exciting, busy, and a little overwhelming. Between buying new school supplies, clothes and backpacks, and filling the schedule with new commitments, it is easy to forget one of the most important items on the list: your child’s health.

A yearly checkup before school starts can help ensure your child is ready to learn, play and grow. During a wellness visit, your pediatrician will review your child’s growth, sleep, nutrition, and activity. The visit may also include vision and hearing checks, blood pressure screening, and time to talk about your child’s mood, stress, or behavior. These simple steps can catch small concerns before they become bigger problems during the school year.

Vaccines are another key part of the back-to-school routine. Since August is National Immunization Awareness Month, it is a good time to check your child’s records and ask your child’s doctor what shots may be due. “Back-to-school health is not just about avoiding illness,” says Dr. Hannah Kim. “It is about giving children the best chance to feel strong, focused and confident in the classroom.”

Parents should also use the check-up appointment to ask questions. Are there ways to help prevent your child from catching a cold or the flu this season? Is your child getting enough sleep for his or her age? No question is too small when it comes to your child’s well-being. “Parents know their children best,” says Dr. Kim. “When families and health care providers work together, we can spot issues early and help kids start the year on solid ground.”

A little planning now can prevent stress later. Call your child’s health care provider to schedule an appointment and keep a copy of all vaccine records in a safe place. With a healthy start, children can walk into school ready for new friends, new lessons, and a successful year ahead.
